Join Travelian’s bird guide leaders on a trip to immerse yourself in Chiapas’s natural, birding and ancient archeological sites in comfort, with a small group of appreciative travelers and with our expert local bird guide.

Taste the enigmatic Mayan beauty of Palenque, a site offering an exquisite balance between jungle and graceful ruins, punctuated with Lovely Cotingas, Royal Flycatchers and Black-headed Trogons. Then enter into the Selva Lacandona, where you lose your sense of time among the ceibas, the howler monkeys, and the birds of the tropical jungle. Be astonished by the murals of Bonampak, as well as Black-and-white Hawk-Eagles, White-collared Manakins and Tody Motmots.

Take a boat ride along the Usumacinta River to the Yaxchilan ruins; travel into other times and hear of the legends and beliefs of the ancient Mayas who controlled this area from the Preclassic through the Late Classic Periods. Share the site with Chestnut-colored Woodpeckers, Rufous-tailed Jacamars, and Purple-crowned Fairies.

Listen to Howler Monkeys at night and ride the Lancantun River in the morning to see White-necked Puffbirds, American Pygmy Kingfishers and Scarlet Macaws. Learn to pronounce and then explore Xbulanjá, where we will have lunch beside the river and hear what the songbirds and the racing waters are trying to tell us.

Prepare for the next stop, Lagunas de Montebello, a National Park of Mexico, created in 1959, designated both a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and a Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance, and home to not only many waterfowl species, but also Blue-and-white Mockingbirds, Green-throated Mountain Gems and Unicolored Jays.

Relax in Comitán and visit its central, traditional zocalo. Then embrace another aspect of Colonial Chiapas in 2200 meter-high San Cristobal de las Casas, whose lively colors and international influence abound. Our birding adventure will end in Tuxtla Gutierrez, but consider joining in progress Travelian’s Chiapas Tours, Part 2, Chiapas Highlands: Markets, Textiles and Traditions, which will have begun the morning of March 16th, and with whose travelers we will be sharing dinner the night of the 16th.

Join Travelian and explore the abundant and surprising natural offerings of Chiapas in comfort and safety with our knowledgeable and friendly guides!
