Experience the traditional indigenous market of Tlacolula de Matamoros, and let your senses be swept up by this invigorating indigenous center of exchange.

Enjoy meeting master artisans and learn about their intricate, creative craftwork. We’ll visit them in their workshops in Teotitlan del Valle (textiles and carpets), Ocotlan de Morelos (ceramics), San Martin Tilcajete (carved wooden animals), Santo Tomas Jalieza, (traditional weavings) and San Bartolo Coyotepec (black pottery).

Take pleasure in enjoying exquisite Oaxacan cuisine at many fine restaurants, including those of traditional Zapotec chefs.

Appreciate the remarkable ancient archeological site of Mitla with its intricate architectural patterning and the expansive Monte Alban site, with our expert local guide.

Itinerary - 9 Days


DAY 1 - TRAVEL DAY TO OAXACA CITY
Travelers coming from SMA will fly from BJX airport on Aeromexico 153, leaving at 11:30 AM, and arriving at 3:30 PM (stop in Mexico City, time between flights 1.5 hours).
Travelers flying from US/CAN/Europe, can meet us at Oaxaca City Airport at 4:00 PM or at our hotel in Oaxaca. Our driver will be waiting for us to take us to our hotel.
6:00 Meet Travelian Guide in hotel lobby for Orientation and receive detailed itinerary and reference materials. Walk to dinner* to a nearby restaurant.

DAY 2 - WALKING TOUR OF DOWNTOWN
Breakfast at hotel. Meet in the hotel lobby for a Walking Tour with our local expert guide. Enjoy lunch* at one of Oaxaca’s excellent restaurants. Free time after lunch to continue exploring, shopping or taking photographs.  That evening meet in hotel lobby and walk to dinner*.

DAY 3 - OCOTLAN, STO. TOMAS JALIEZA, SN. MARTIN TILCAJETE, & sN. BARTOLO COYOTEPEC
Breakfast at hotel. Meet in hotel lobby with our expert local guide. Depart for Ocotlan de Morelos. Arrive in Ocotlan and visit el Templo de Santo Domingo and its Artisan Museum, visit the home of Rodolfo Morales. Depart for Santo Tomas Jalieza to witness weavers creating traditional woven goods. Leave for San Martin Tilcajete and enjoy lunch*.  Visit a local master carver’s workshop of wooden animals for a demonstration. Then stop in San Bartolo de Coyotepec for a visit to a black pottery master. Depart our hotel in Oaxaca City. That evening meet in hotel lobby and walk to dinner*.

DAY 4 - ETHNOBOTANIC ART GARDEN AND MUSEUM OF OAXACAN CULTURES
Breakfast at hotel. Walk to Botanical Gardens for private tour. Enjoy a light snack and a cup of coffee or hot chocolate* at a nearby café.  Walk to Museum of Oaxacan Cultures.  Visit the Museum. Free time to explore or rest at our hotel. That evening meet in lobby and walk to dinner*.

DAY 5 - TEOTITLAN DEL VALLE
Breakfast at hotel. Meet in lobby and depart for Teotitlan del Valle. Visit Indigenous market and Textile Museum. Depart for workshop of a master weaver. Experience a demonstration of how these magnificent rugs are created. Enjoy a traditional lunch, and have time to purchase weavings and rugs. Depart for our hotel in Oaxaca City. That evening meet in hotel lobby and walk to a restaurant for supper*.

DAY 6 - TLACOLULA MARKET, MITLA ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE
Breakfast at hotel. Meet in hotel lobby with our local guide and depart for the Tlacolula Indigenous Sunday Market. Drive to lunch en route to Mitla. After lunch* drive to Mitla Archeological Site. Depart for Mitla archeological site. Enjoy exploring the Mitla site and its market with our expert guide. Drive back to our hotel in Oaxaca City. Meet in lobby and drive to dinner*.

DAY 7 - MONTE ALBAN ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE AND DOWNTOWN
Breakfast at hotel. Meet our expert guide in hotel lobby and depart for Monte Alban archeological site. Arrive for tour of the archeological site and its museum. Visit the Museum Shop or enjoy having a refreshing drink in the café*.  Return to town for lunch* at a local popular restaurant. Walk back to our hotel or enjoy exploring town. That evening meet in lobby and drive to dinner*.

DAY 8 - FREE DAY TO EXPLORE, VISIT MUSEUMS, SHOP, TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS
Breakfast at hotel. This will a free day to explore Oaxaca’s historical center on own or with other travelers. Detailed information provided (booklet and city tour). Lunch on your own*. That evening, meet in our hotel lobby and walk to a restaurant for our Farewell Dinner*.

DAY 9 - TRAVEL DAY
Travelian Guide for this tour will depart for the airport at 10:00 SM and fly to BJX airport on Aeromexico 2049 (with a stop in Mexico City with 2 hours between flights.) Flight departs at 12:20 PM and arrives into Leon at 4:50 PM and then shuttle to San Miguel de Allende. If you are planning to join our Oaxaca Birding – Central Valley, Highlands, Isthumus, Pacific Lowlands and Coast Tour, a Travelian guide for that tour will greet you at the hotel that evening after the group arrives.
